Release Technique.

Personal Goals...
  1. I need to concentrate on shifting my body around the space a lot more.
  2. I need to focus on making my curves deeper through breath.
  3. Focusing on linking my movements together with fluidity and ease.
Sensations that occured...
  • I managed to push my body to its limits in travelling and deepening my plies, which made me feel like I am on the way to achieving one of my goals.
  • When I released my weight into my movements, it helped to make my dancing look and feel a lot more full.
  • When we were doing brushes of the feet and tondu's I could feel every bone through my feet articulating and this abled me to concentrate on what the rest of my body was performing.
Emotions that occured...
When doing release technique I feel like I can relax my body into my movements easier than any other technique. This is one of my better techniques as I feel I can perform to my best because I can travel through the space quickly. I feel I can extend and play with the phrases set because I can use my flexibility, energy and momentum to lengthen my movements making everything bigger and larger. In release I feel that I don't have to stop the movement; it constantly flows and even when doing a plie, there is always that extra depth that I can take before continuing onto the following part of the phrase. I feel really involved when I perform Release Technique. It makes me happy.

This is a video of me trying to travel, but this can always and will be improved.

Ballet

My Personal Goals...
  1. Pushing my turn out to the full.
  2. Articulating my feet (going through every bone) when performing degage's.
  3. Extending and pushing my movements further (plies).
  4. Try not to look too stiff and relax and look more balletic.
  5. Perform my sequences more.
Skills...
  • Using my flexibility to push though the movements; plies and grande battement.
Sensations occured...
  • Doing ballet makes me feel more determined to increase my ability as I haven't had much experience at it.
  • Balancing on releve in 5th makes me feel proud and excited as I can perform this with ease as I have had a lot of previous experience through my gymnastics.
Emotions that occured...
  • When in releve I feel strong.
  • When I can't grasp a sequence I am more determined to do it, therefore I practise until I get it.
  • When I therefore get the sequence I couldn't perform, I feel happy and beautiful.
I have included a video of a phrase I can't grasp yet, I will practise this and put on an up to date version on in a few days...

  • Expressing myself in my dancing.
New ideas for choreography?
I would like to make an interesting and quirky piece of choreography that is different and unexpected. I like the feel of intricate dance phrases and would also like to come up with something quite extraordinary myself. I like to use an eclectic mix of floorwork and normal standing work, involving the body parts which no one would think to use in fast movements. I would like to use weight in my movement phrases as I feel like this gives a full sense of what the body is portraying, alongside breath.

Anatomical knowledge I thought about...
I felt that using my breath helps when performing centre/core work, it releases and relaxes my body into the movement. I enjoy the twisting sensation that occurs in spiral work (which usually works alongside the abdominals) too help create a pulling feeling.

Introduction...

Hello, I am Hannah Goggin and I am a 3rd Year Dance Choreography Student at Northumbria University.

I am hoping to increase my ability in dance by listening, learning and also self criticism. This will hopefully show my strengths, weaknesses and improvements in what I do inside the dance studio. I am hoping to achieve goals set (weekly and termly) so that I can see progress in my choreographing and performance.

My strengths include:
  • Flexibility.
  • Strength in arms, abdominals and legs.
  • My determination has increased.
  • Motivation.
  • Performance is increasing.
My weaknesses include:
  • Improvisation.
  • Strength in my back is weaker than my abs, my back is flexible but not strong.
  • Ballet; jumps (co-ordination).
  •          ; footwork (landing flat footed in leaps in ballet).
  •          ; when I make a mistake I pull various facial expressions (make it obvious).
Personal Challenges.
I need to think about the muscles and bones moving and how it effects how I dance; this could either alter or improve my dancing and range of movements. With this I need to think about performing in ballet "showing off". Helping with my strength work, I need to increased the intensity of the muscle in my back.

Targets to achieve:
  • Improve overall in ballet.
  • Perform in ballet.
  • Using the feet as much as possible in all techniques.
  • Using my breath more.
Strategies for this:
  • Attend more classes outside of lesson time.
  • Build up the confidence to "show off" in ballet aswell as other techniques.
  • Using a theraband, stretching and practising moveing through the feet.
  • Think about deepening movement through breath.
My opinions on technique and the value behind it?
Improves you completly as a dancer.

A quote from Cirque Du Soleil explains the power behind why I dance;
"Creativity is the fire behind your success, and the centre of this creative energy are talented individuals with passion to challenge their own limits."

I am interested in how the inner body reacts and changes when I dance in the studio and I am beginning to recognise and apply this on a daily basis.
